CONTEXT
The original “Cuando Cubango Energy 2040” study, developed by GESTO Energy Consulting, provided a comprehensive strategic roadmap for the sustainable electrification of the Cuando-Cubango province, with a focus on renewable energy integration, particularly solar and hydropower. The study evaluated various energy scenarios aimed at reducing reliance on fossil fuels and enhancing regional energy security and environmental sustainability.
The Government of Angola awarded the consortium Sun Africa-Omatapalo the development and deployment of 16 solar Mini-Grids across the province, totaling 15.8 MW of installed capacity. This development represents a significant practical step towards realizing the energy scenarios envisioned in the original study.
OBJECTIVES
Assess the impact of the 16 solar Mini-Grids on the electrification scenarios outlined in the original “Cuando Cubango Energy 2040” roadmap.
DESCRIPTION
This update focuses on integrating the planned 16 solar Mini-Grids into the existing “Cuando Cubango Energy 2040” framework, analyzing how these installations influence the overall energy system of the province. The Mini-Grids, strategically located in remote communities were expected to accelerate rural electrification, improve reliability of power supply, and reduce carbon emissions by offsetting fossil fuel usage.
