KENYA, OLKARIA I REHABILITATION PROJECT DESIGN REVIEW

During the first weeks of December 2023, took place the design review meetings for the Olkaria I Power Plant rehabilitation project.

The different multidisciplinary meetings occured simultaneously with the participation of experts from Kenya, Portugal, Italy and China.

The Olkaria I power plant rehabilitation project started in 2016 and is expected to finish 2025. Divided in 3 phases: i) Concept design, technical specifications, Bid Document Preparation and PQ documents preparation; ii) Assistance in Bidding, Pre-qualification & Bid evaluation, Contract negotiation and award processes; and Gesto through its kenyan company SGC is now supporting the third phase: iii) Project Implementation, which consist in construction and commissioning of the power plant.

About the project

Consistently with the continued economic growth and after 32 years of operation, KenGen decided to revamp the geothermal power plant of Olkaria I (first geothermal power plant established in Kenya in 1980 and the oldest in Africa), since most of its equipment is no longer in production with difficulties on acquisition of spare parts.

The rehabilitation project includes changing the turbines of the power plant, rehabilitate the entire facility, increasing its installed capacity from the current 45 MW to 63 MW.
