CONTEXT

The increasing demand to augment the renewable share in the national energy production led Eólica Galenova S.L. to select Gesto for the technical assistant for public tenders of mini hydro concessions.

OBJECTIVES

The main objectives of this project are the identification of the most suitable sites for small hydro power plants on a limited area and carrying out feasibility studies on them.

DESCRIPTION

Three Portuguese river basin management agencies (Administração da Região Hidrográfica do Centro de Coimbra, Administração da Região Hidrográfica do Tejo de Lisbon, and Administração da Região do Norte do Porto) seeks promoters to yield concession, build and operate 19 small hydro projects totaling 128 MW in capacity.

These concessions allow the water use for hydropower production, as well as the design, construction, operation and maintenance of hydropower plants, and authorization to supply spare capacity to the utility grid. They also allow the construction of a hydropower plant or plants within specific geographic coordinates of certain river stretches identified by lot numbers.

This includes the identification of sites on around 300 km of streams throughout the territory and feasibility studies of projects totaling 130 MW.
