CONTEXT
The project was entirely identified from greenfield by GESTO’s Hydro Department, as a result of the Pumped-Storage Plants Survey Project in Portugal, as a remarkable way to increase the renewable energy share in the national energy production.
OBJECTIVES
The main objective of this project was the development of a hydro pumped-storage.
DESCRIPTION
The Carvão-Ribeira Pumped-Storage Plant is located on the Távora river, a Douro river tributary on the North of Portugal. It includes a concrete and a landfill dam, an underground powerhouse in cavern equipped with two reversible units and an hydraulic circuit by tunnel. It has an installed capacity of 550 MW and mean annual generation of 860 GWh. Estimated budget for the scheme is €330M and the reduction of CO2 equivalent per year is expected to be around 750 kton.
