CONTEXT

The high dependence on fossil fuel is one of the main reasons for the difficulties experienced in the electricity sector in Cape Verde. According to forecasts the electricity demand will double by 2020, reaching 670 GWh, with this raise on electricity consumption and none other Renewable Energy projects than the ones currently underway, the fossil fuels consumption will continue to increase. However Cape Verde’s has a high renewable potential, hence this project has arisen with the intent to establish scenarios that allow for a 50% renewable penetration in the country.

 

 

OBJECTIVES

The “50% Renewable Cape Verde Renewable Action Plan” project consisted on establishing scenarios that would allow the country to achieve a 50% Renewable Energy Sources (RES) generation.

Gesto develop several tasks in order to complete this project meaning this way a very complete all around project that lead to the identification of over 30 renewable energy projects that are feasible and economical viable for Cape Verde.

Resulting in the creation of a Road Map and investment detail to ensure 50% renewable energy penetration in the National Grid by 2020.

 

 

DESCRIPTION

The 50% Renewable Cape Verde Renewable Action Plan project includes: the assessment of the wind, waves, geothermal, solar, biomass/MSW and hydro, desk and site assessments (for each RES) in order to evaluate its potential and elaborate a corresponding Atlas for each island and, ultimately, identification of projects and feasibility studies, aiming for its integration on the National Electrical Grid.
